The Union Historical Fire Society held its 36th Annual Spring Melt at the Allentown, PA Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 22nd and Sunday, 23rd.   First and foremost, we would like to thank its members, especially Tom and Cheryl D’Arcangelo, who helped make the show a success once again.  We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the vendors for their continued support in the Spring Melt.  Exhibitors and attendees, from both coasts of The United States and spanning in between, from California, Florida, Texas and communities throughout New England, along with Canada were in attendance.

The auction, under the direction of Donn Zalewski, was very well attended on Saturday with the attendance up from last year.  A big draw was Ira Rubin’s outstanding collection of over 500 badges, helmets and fronts, alarm equipment and an original Chief Hugh Halligan Bar.  This was the second Spring Melt that Ira was not with us, and a very emotional one, as his personal collection was a large part of the auction.  Many of his friends remarked how difficult it was to watch his bagpipes with accessories being auctioned off.  We all would much rather have Ira with us.

As for Sunday’s marketplace, the hall was full with vendors, including many local fire companies.  We are always happy to make room even up to the last minute.  Vendors reported good sales, some having their best year to date.  It is really great to see so many people reconnecting each year, as well as new friendships being made.

Over the years, funds generated from the Spring Melt have been contributed to a number of different organizations, including the Burn Foundation.  Other donations have been made to several museums, which help support the cause of refurbishing antique fire apparatus.  Next year’s Spring Melt is scheduled for April 28th and 29th, 2018 at the Allentown Fair Grounds.  We hope to see you there!
